VENICE AND SANTA MONICA, HOW TO GET AROUND
I'm a big fan of the bicycle as transportation but I realize that sometimes only a motored vehicle will do. Because of the parking shortage in Santa Monica and Venice Beach a car should be your last resort if you are going to motor around.
SANTA MONICA RENTAL CARS
All the big rent-a-car firms are represented at the airport as well as in Santa Monica but In Venice Beach there are very few car rental agencies. Car rental is very competetive and I've found some you a great Dollar discount deal for you, 5% off any vehicle. Use Code: CJ05. Good thu 12-31-08 Some Restrictions apply.
. Rent-A-Wreck, another local creation offers a wide range of new and used rentals including things like vintage Mustang and Cadillac convertibles, their number is 310-478-0676.
As a dedicated beach bum I know that you would want to know about this chance to save up to 30% on Rental Cars
For those who love Mini's and other exotics try Midway Car Rental at the corner of Pico and Ocean Ave, right across Pico Blvd from the Viceroy Hotel.
SANTA MONICA'S BIG BLUE BUS
Santa Monica has what is widely acknowledged as he best bus system in the United States, the Big Blue Bus. These buses run on CNG, are spotless inside and have a fare of only 75 cents. The Big Blue Bus is not limited to Santa Monica, it runs through Venice, to Los Angeles International airport and downtown Los Angeles as well as Santa Monica. You can check the complete Big Blue Bus Schedule here.
Santa Monica also offers the Mini Blue, a shuttle service on a loop route that only costs 50 cents. The Tide is the name of the Mini Bus that serves the beach area. It operates from noon till 8pm Sun - Thurs and noon to 10 pm on Fri. and Sat. The route runs from Marine and Apian Way by the South Beach Park, turns north and follows Main Street to Bickneel, where it jogs up to 4th Street which it follows past the 3d Street Promenade to Wilshire Blvd, where it loops around the new Library, then heads back south on Broadway to Ocean Ave and south to Apian Way to finish the loop. The Tide will get you from the beach to within a few blocks of anything in downtown Santa Monica including the 3d Street Promenade.
SANTA MONICA AND VENICE TAXI SERVICE
While you can call any taxi service, and there are plenty of them in L.A, if you want quick service and a comfortable ride you call Euro Taxi which is a local firm that has a fleet of Mercedes Benz vehicles. If it arrives sooner and costs the same, why not? Their number is 310-828-4200
VENICE BEACH HAS A NEW TWIST ON CAR RENTAL
Just the other day I ran into a new company on Abbot Kinney Blvd. The firm is called Spin and they have a fleet of vintage and exotic vehicles available on a sort of fractional ownership. You can take a exotic car like an Aston Martin home for a few days to a month. The cars are incredible, the one that caught my eye was the Alfa Romeo Guillietta, just like the one I used to have before I got sensible.
