Driving to Santa Monica and Venice Beach
Santa Monica and Venice Beach are only a few miles from the intersection of the 405 and the 10 freeways, putting these beaches within a 1 hour drive for most residents of Southern California. If you want to arrive via the 10 freeway use the 4th/5th Street exit, just before the Pacific Coast Highway exit. Go south and turn right on Pico. When you reach Pacific Ave you can go north to Santa Monica or
south to Venice Beach. Coming off the 405 the quickest way is to exit Venice Blvd. and just head west. You will run right into the parking lot at the south side of the Venice Boardwalk.
If you fly into Los Angeles International Airport or LAX, Venice Beach and Santa Monica are only 20 minutes or a $25 cab ride away once your jet touches down, compared to $45 - $50 going to Hollywood or Downtown.
Bus from LAX to Santa Monica & Venice
The Big Blue Bus that runs Between Santa Monica and LAX is bus #33 The 33 Rapid is quick and easy, it starts at 4th and Wilshire and runs south with limited stops ending at LAX and the Metro line station in El Segundo. By train to Santa Monica & Venice
While in past years you could have taken the train to any one of several local stations, today Los Angeles is in the process of rebuilding a rail system for billions of dollars what was originally built on the cheap and then abandoned. So today the closest rail stations are in either Hollywood or El Segundo. and then take the number 10 Santa Monica bus for the last leg to downtown Santa Monica.
Hitch hiking to Santa Monica and Venice
For all you old hippies and Dead Headers, If you coming to California, (as the song goes) and you have chosen to hitchhike, put some flowers in your hair, stay off the freeways and instead follow old Route 66. You'll have a much more scenic trip, and when the road ends you will find the Santa Monica Pier just 3 blocks to the south.
